The label:
your guarantee in bio-based content
Faced with the challenges of the ecological and energy transition, the building sector is in full evolution: reducing the environmental impacts of buildings must become a priority for public and private contracts.
The ecological character of a material or a building depends on many factors. The use of biobased raw materials that are technically efficient and produced in an environmentally friendly manner is one of them and can significantly contribute to limiting the environmental impacts of buildings. Moreover, if the products are local, which is common when using bio-based construction materials sectors — local cultivation and production chains —, the environmental impacts of freight transport are further limited. In this context, the biobased label improves the visibility and recognition of your products containing a percentage of biobased raw materials.

The European terminology standard NF EN 16575 defines a biobased product as being “entirely or partially derived from bioresources”. Therefore, a product that would only incorporate 1% of biobased material is considered, according to this definition, to be biobased.
A demanding label, based on solid pillars to promote responsible practices and enhance a territorial economy.
The Biobased Product label was born to respond to this problem. It establishes significant thresholds for the integration of biomass by product family (70% for insulators, 25% for vegetable concrete, etc.), certifies the content of biobased raw materials and provides visibility and transparency to products that respect it.It is based on four fundamental pillars:
- Repository: Defines stringent requirements by product category.
- Materialization: Identifies labelled products using the logo and an approval number.
- Management body: Led by a committee bringing together key players in the value chain.
- Control body: Ensures compliance through independent diagnostics and controls.

The label has 3 main objectives:
- Strengthening the market renewable products thanks to credible certification.
- Bringing transparency total on bio-based quantities and their role in carbon storage.
- Promote local and responsible sectors to reduce the global carbon footprint.
What are the prerequisites to obtain the label?
The product must include a% minimum mass of raw material from biomass, defined in the reference by product family. This percentage differs between product families (see annex 1 of the standard).
The use of the label must meet transparency requirements with respect to the public:
- The product must have, or be in the process of having, a environmental product declaration (EPD) available on national databases (INIES in France and B-EPD in Belgium)
- THEOrigin of biobased raw materials must be visible
A display that provides visibility and transparency
The percentage of raw material derived from biomass is displayed and the label is divided according to the percentage ranges of biobased substances by mass as follows:

Bronze
10% ≤% biobased by mass < 50%

Argent
50% ≤% biobased by mass < 70%

Or
70% ≤% biobased by mass ≤ 100%
Highlight more than the percentage of biobased material:
The applicant may also optionally request that his product benefit from an option of certifying the origin of the products and materials that compose it:
At least 80% of the biobased raw materials used in the product must be of French origin, i.e. produced or recycled and processed in France. The product must be manufactured in a factory located on French territory.
At least 90% of the biobased raw materials used in the product must be produced or recycled and processed in Wallonia or within a radius of 350 km. The product must be manufactured in a factory located in Walloon territory
At least 80% of the biobased raw materials used in the product must be of local origin, i.e. produced or recycled and processed within a geographical radius of 350 km around the site where the product was produced.
Mass proportion of raw material resulting from the recycling of a finished product, also called “post-consumer material”.
